Spanish Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero's second term in office has not been a happy affair for Spain. Soundly re-elected on a post-modern platform of Socialism, pacifism and feminism just 18 months ago, Zapatero has since stumbled badly in the face of an economic crisis that shows no signs of abating. With his poll numbers now at an all-time low, Zapatero is hoping that his October 13 visit to the White House will reverse his foundering political fortunes.

More than 920,000 new immigrants arrived in Spain during 2007, according to data just published by the Spanish National Statistics Institute (INE). The politically sensitive figures were released during the middle of the summer holidays, presumably in an effort to avoid their detection by the vacationing general public.

US President George W Bush has one more year in the White House. But already many Europeans are predicting that the next American president will conduct a kinder, gentler US foreign policy that appeals to their post-modern pacifist instincts. They are sure to be disappointed.

A Spanish anti-terrorism court delivered an unexpectedly mixed verdict in the trial of 28 defendants charged in the 2004 Madrid train bombings. It convicted 21 people of involvement in the carnage, but acquitted seven others, including the man accused by prosecutors of having masterminded Europe’s second-deadliest terrorist attack after Lockerbie. Only three of those found guilty were convicted for mass murder.
