Stand for Israel, Stand for the West

por Friends of Israel Initiative, 22 de junio de 2010

Under the leadership of Spain’s former Prime Minister José María Aznar – sponsor of this idea – a group of important personalities has launched a new project in defense of Israel’s right to exist. Under the name Friends of Israel Initiative, notable people such as Mr. Aznar himself, the Nobel Peace Prize laureate David Trimble, Peru’s former president Alejandro Toledo, Italian philosopher Marcello Pera, former United States Ambassador to the United Nations John Bolton, British historian Andrew Roberts, and others, seek to counter the attempts to delegitimize the State of Israel and its right to live in peace within safe and defensible borders.

This Initiative arises at this juncture from the sponsors’ desires to express their outrage and concern about the unprecedented delegitimation campaign against Israel, driven by the enemies of the Jewish State and perversely assumed by numerous international authorities.

Essentially, this Initiative is different from previous ones because it is promoted by people who are not Jewish and whose motivations are based on the deep conviction that Israel is part of the Western world. In fact, today Israel is a fundamental actor for the future of the West. Although the peace process is important, the members of Friends of Israel Initiative are more concerned about the onslaught of radical Islamism as well as the specter of a nuclear Iran since these are threats affecting not only Israel, but the entire world.

The Friends of Israel Initiative is committed to act consistently and uninterruptedly in its effort to disseminate its members’ vision of Israel as a democratic, open, and advanced nation that should be perceived and treated as such – just as it is done with any other country. Israel is a fully sovereign and responsible nation; although we can all disagree with some of its decisions, this fact should not be used as an excuse to question Israel’s right to exist, its legitimacy or its national rights. Just as the sponsors of this Initiative believe, there is no West without Israel.
