On Wednesday July 12, 2006, Hezbollah forces launched a cross-border attack from southern Lebanon against Israel, killing eight soldiers and kidnapping two others; Israel immediately declared this an act of war and began an aerial assault on Hezbollah strongholds and Lebanese infrastructure.It has now moved into ground operations. Hezbollah, a group established by Iran in 1982 to promote its Islamic fundamentalist ideology in the region,and listed as a terrorist group by Israel, the United States, the United Kingdom and Canada among others, offered to trade the captured soldiers for Hezbollah prisoners held in Israeli jails; it also stepped up its campaign of rocket attacks against Israeli cities, using Iranian and Syrian missiles to reach cities previously out of its range, including Haifa. Several nations and observes have called for an immediate ceasefire, while others, including the United States, have argued that Israel must be allowed to continue its campaign against Hezbollah.The UN Security Council has repeatedly called for the disarmament of Hezbollah, and passed resolutions 1559 and 1583 reinforcing the international consensus that Hezbollah be disarmed and that the central Lebanese government must take control of the southern region of the country.
